The Ooni of Ile-Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi on Sunday 17th January 2016 broke the 79 years rivalry between two great Yoruba kingdoms of Ile-Ife and Oyo. The last time an Ooni visited an Alaafin was in March 1937.
The Ooni’s visit was for the 45th coronation anniversary thanksgiving of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi held at the Methodist Church, Apaara, Oyo. Dressed in Ooni’s trademark attire, Oba Ogunwusi arrived the venue accompanied by several other Obas. Oba Ogunwusi and Alaafin embraced, shook hands and sat on the same chair radiating with joy and beaming with smiles to the admiration of the congregation.
Oba Adeyemi, later revealed how close he was to Ooni Adesoji Aderemi saying he never disrespected him but prayed for his longevity. He said the misunderstanding started during the reign of the last Ooni (Sijuwade) but he is happy with Oba Ogunwusi’s move to unite all Yoruba Obas.
Oba Ogunwusi in his response described Alaafin has a great monarch. He further emphasised the arrival of a new dawn for all Yoruba sons and daughters all over the world.
