The Supreme court has declared Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the validly elected governor of Rivers State. The supreme court upturned the judgement of both the election petitions tribunal and the appeal court nullifying his victory at the April 11, 2015 poll. The petition challenging the election of Mr. Wike as Rivers State Governor was filed by Dakuku Peterside, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election.
In a lead judgment by Justice Kekere-Ekun, the Supreme court unanimously confirmed Wike’s election on the grounds that he won with the lawfully valid votes. This is seen as a major victory for the beleagured Peoples Democratic Party whose members are facing corruption charges across various courts in relations to a $2.1Billion arms deal involving the office of the former National Security Adviser.
