More facts have surfaced in response to the controversy generated by the statement of the Alake of Egbaland, on the seniority of Yoruba Obas and the response by the Esogban of Benin and Odionwere of Benin Kingdom (traditional head), Chief David Edebiri.

The Alake had said that the Western Region hierarchy of monarchs was in the following order “Ooni 1st, Alaafin 2nd, Oba of Benin 3rd, Alake 4th and Awujale 5th”. A statement well rebuffed by the Esogban of Benin.

The picture below allegedly taken in 1937 shows the senior Obas and the Governor of Nigeria.

At the centre is Ooni Aderemi, to his left is Oba Akenzua of Benin and Alake of Egbaland Oba Ademola. To Ooni’s right, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Oladigbolu and Oba Adesanya Gbelegbuwa the Awujale of Ijebu Ode. The white man in the picture is the Governor of Nigeria….

We can only guess that the the debate on the ranking of Yoruba Obas will continue for a long time with both camps presenting more facts to buttress their position.
