Ben Llewellyn-Jones, the Political Counsellor at British High Commission Abuja and former High Commissioner to Rwanda as well as the non resident British Ambassador to Burundi, asked this very interesting question following the high rate of violence & thuggery that characterized the Rivers state National and State Assembly rerun elections which held over the weekend.
His thought provoking question was, “If legislators salaries were cut would desire for violence at #RiversRerun have collapsed like #INEC tent yesterday?”
Indeed it is estimated that Nigeria has one of the highest paid legislators. It will be recalled that the Nigerian government has been spending a total of N150 billion per year on the NASS but has been forced to step it down to N120 billion this year following rising outcry that the lawmakers are taking too much from the Federation Account leaving little for other sectors.
